***The Golden Club will
spend the winter in the sunny south, as that sweet
swinger from south of the Mason Dixon line, Jim Grogan, took the title this
year, besting a record field of 98 golfers with a fine score of 75. This was a doubly memorable year for
Jim, as it also marked his entry into that most exclusive body, the Golden
Ball Club. Those of you already
in the Club will remember Jim as the fellow with his face pressed against the
screening surrounding the Rooney Cabin in years past. In his acceptance speech, Jim credited
his success to former ***In Pink Lady
action, a new Classic wrinkle was unveiled with the naming of each
group’s pink lady.
“Donna Quixote”, shepherded around the course by E. Bird
Whiting, Mike Clabby, Kevin Joyce, and Jud Smith, was the winning ball, with
a tournament record score of 84.
Interestingly, “Donna” recorded a score lower than any of
the four golfers in her group.
Asked to explain this phenomenon, Kevin Joyce (a multiple Pink Lady
prizewinner) stated, “I learned many Classics ago-just treat the lady
kindly, and she’ll return the favor.” ***A new hole dedication plaque was unveiled a this year’s
classic. In a touching ceremony,
Bob “Bobbie” Schwarz was recognized for his tireless devotion to
the Classic and its traditions.
Bob has participated in all but one Clabby Classic, which is notable
since he is usually not invited.
The 8th hole is now Bob’s hole, an interesting choice
for the big hitter, who has been known to bring the 325 yard monster to its
knees using only a driver and a 3 iron.
